If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye or live locally, and would like to do a painting or drawing workshop, let me know and we can organize something, whether it’s one day or several, sketching on location or indoors out of the weather in the beautiful natural light of Skyeworks Gallery in Portree (with easy access to the bakery below). Beginners welcome! It costs £75 a day (10 to 4ish) and materials can be provided.
Scheduled Art Workshops:
HIGHAM HALL: 31 March to 5 April 2019 Capturing Skye: Vibrant & Atmospheric Acrylics & Watercolours, at Higham Hall in the Lake District.
Group size: 12 (last I checked, there were still a couple of places)
11 & 12 April 2019: Sketch to Studio, in Skyeworks Gallery in Portree.
A two-day workshop looking at information-gathering on location through sketching, note-taking, and photography, which is then used to create a larger studio painting. £150, maximum six participants.
This is a workshop about information gathering/sketching and using this alongside reference photos for creating studio-based paintings, with my sharing how I do it. It’d be a mixture of location and indoors in the workshop area of Skyeworks Gallery (which is up a flight of stairs, above The Isle of Skye Baking Company, in Portree), depending on the weather. Many of my favourite spots are accessible by bus from Portree and a shortish walk; Portree itself has an array of possibilities. If the weather is too wet for being outside, we’ll work in the studio only. I don’t do car-based sketching, nor do I paint on location in wild weather.
HIGHAM HALL: 7 to 12 November Capturing Skye: Exploring Expressive Mixed Media, at Higham Hall in the English Lake District. Residential £475, non-residential £313.
Learn to work expressively and freely by combining drawing and painting mediums to create vibrant, atmospheric paintings inspired by reference images of the Isle of Skye. For all levels wanting to loosen up, learn more about different mediums, and explore “what if…?” possibilities. Think of mixed media as “acrylics plus other things”.
Group size: 12 (last I checked, there were five places available)
Note: the days of the week this workshop runs have changed, it’s Thursday to Tuesday rather than Sunday to Friday.
Dates not available for art workshops:
22 to 28 May.
29/30 May (provisionally booked for a private workshop).
9 to 20 July 2019 (At Patchings Art Festival near Nottingham)
HOW TO BOOK: Email me on art(at)marion(dot)scot and let me know what/when/etc you’re interested in doing. Previous workshops have included: Introduction to Watercolour/Acrylics, Expressive Painting with Acrylics, Colour Theory for Beginners.
Cancellation fee: 20% of workshop fee if you cancel within seven days of the arranged workshop; taking out travel insurance is recommended. 100% workshop fee refund if for some reason I have to cancel (it hasn’t happened yet).
COMMENTS FROM ART WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS:
“Thank you for a wonderful three day workshop. You taught me heaps about composition, technique and media and I enjoyed being challenged in such a supportive environment. Thank you for your generosity with your ideas and knowledge, and for your enthusiasm for sharing your passion. Thanks also for nurturing any glimpse of ability! I loved what I achieved, and am excited about the possibilities and potential which may lie ahead!” — JR“We really can’t say thank you enough for the time we had together! Both of us are very clear it was the highlight of our time on Skye. We love the beauty and wildness of the island, but the workshop together was special! For me it was a real ‘life experience’ which continues to enrich me and I look at what came of our time together on canvas and in sketch book with a real sense of pride.” J &A.
How to Get to Skye:
1. From London: Fly to Inverness or take the train to Inverness or Fort William, then bus to Portree (about three hours).
2. Fly/train/bus to Glasgow, then long-distance bus to Portree (about nine hours) or rent a car.
3. Fly to Amsterdam, then short flight to Inverness, then bus from Inverness to Portree or rent a car.
There are lots of options. Be sure to check the location as Portree is used in addresses as a region, not only the village. Most self-catering accommodation bookings run Saturday to Saturday. Recommended B&Bs (great hosts, and some of my paintings!): Larchside B&B, Lochshore House B&B, Marsco B&B
