Rocky peaks and cloud-touching mountains, heather- and grass-covered hills, cliff-top views, still lochs and tumbling rivers, dramatic waterfalls and single-track roads. These paintings are created in my studio from on-location sketches and visual memories, with repeat visits to a spot to explore it in different seasons and light. My aim is not to replicate nature but to explore the intensity of a location and to convey a sense of its essence.
Moods of the Minch series: Paintings inspired by the view from the Isle of Skye across the stretch of sea called the Minch. The light changes as frequently as the weather, from saturated sunshine to muted mists to golden sunsets. Other favourite sources of inspiration when I was living on Skye included Uig and Staffin bays, the north of the Trotternish Peninsula, the view from Elgol towards the Cuillin, and the large waves rolling onto Harris/Lewis from the Atlantic.
Tree paintings: A few miles south of where my studio was on the Isle of Skye, down the hill, around the sharp bend and a bit further on, would see me in the Uig woodland. It may be small in size, but not in inspiration: broadleaved trees, sea shore, rivers, waterfalls. Not to neglect the mesmerizing patterns of trees when driving on the mainland towards Inverness or Fort William.
